Rising young talent captured
the rise of the World Trade Center buildings in images this past year
thanks to the Wilhelm & Karl Maybach Foundation’s
World Trade Center Documentary Arts Project. To celebrate the
successful work of two project protégés,
Silverstein Properties—owners of the WTC site and Foundation
partners for this project—hosted a July 23rd exhibition, On
Site – Documenting the Rebuilding of the World Trade Center.
The event highlighted the work of talented young photographers Vicky
Roy and Nicole Tung, as well as their mentor, Joe Woolhead.
“The
photographs of the exhibition brought out the aspects of the
reconstruction commonly overlooked, like [the way] the historic
structure is rising again much like a phoenix. All the pictures have
stories to tell,” said Immanuel Avraham, a producer and
filmmaker who was so inspired by Mr. Roy’s story that he is
documenting it in a film.
Both
protégés are well on their way to success. Since
returning to India Mr. Roy has held exhibitions in New Delhi and Mumbai
featuring his photography of the WTC site. He credits his experience
with the Foundation for helping him build confidence so that he can be
ready to take on new challenges.
Ms. Tung
has done assignments for the New York Times and is currently planning
her next project, to develop a program for Native American children
living on reservations teaching them to document their lives through
photography. Of her experience participating in the World Trade Center
Documentary Arts Project, Ms. Tung said, “This was a rare
opportunity—one that will stay with me for many, many
years.”
